In Grim Dawn, you explore the devastated world of Cairn, hunt for equipment and develop a character through two combined masteries. Items, crafting recipes and Devotion bonuses earned by restoring shrines give you further ways to shape a build.
Quests and factions matter too: your decisions can affect people in the world and your standing with different groups. You can play solo or in co-op with up to four people. The Grim Dawn Steam page describes the base game’s features.
The Base Game and Expansions

Fangs of Asterkarn launched on July 23, 2026. It adds new regions, the shapeshifting Berserker mastery and Ascendant Mode for the campaign endgame. The expansion requires the base game, Ashes of Malmouth and Forgotten Gods.
The free version 1.3 update arrived alongside the expansion, bringing inventory, interface and WASD control changes. Those changes are part of the free update; Ascendant Mode belongs to Fangs of Asterkarn. The official Ascendant Mode guide explains its requirements and altar mechanics.
Builds Through Masteries, Devotion and Equipment
Combining two masteries determines the skills and modifiers available to your character. Devotion adds another layer: restoring shrines earns points to spend in constellations. These offer attributes and Celestial Powers that can enhance your skills. Equipment and Devotion therefore give you further development choices alongside your class combination.
Crafting recipes come from enemies, chests and quest rewards, expanding the equipment and consumables you can make. Rare recipes may require unusual materials, while higher-tier recipes can use already crafted items as ingredients. Loot can therefore supply both a replacement for an equipment slot and ingredients for later crafting.
Exploration and Factions
Faction standing can unlock additional quests, merchant discounts and special items. Helping one group can also turn a rival faction against you. These decisions shape your progress through a world that combines handcrafted design with random elements. Roguelike dungeons provide another challenge: their entrances close behind you, and you cannot simply teleport out.
