Spirit has been available in the PC Early Access version of Titan Quest II since the August update. The mastery lets you summon spirits, empower spells and use Life for certain effects. A workable build has to account for Shades, Energy and Life together: a strong spender will disappoint if you cannot supply its resource or if its cost leaves you too vulnerable.
Choose a direction first. Do you want to rely mainly on Eidolon Guards and Athanekros, deal damage yourself as a spellcaster, or combine both? Then inspect the abilities and modifiers you select to see what spends Shades, what improves their regeneration and where Life can be reserved instead of Energy. These decisions concern the Spirit system introduced in August, including the subsequent August hotfixes.
1. Match Shade Spending With Generation
Shades are Spirit’s exclusive resource and can serve summoners, spellcasters and hybrids. Check the modifiers on each ability you choose. A Soul Burn modifier consumes Shades on cast for a benefit such as greater damage or a removed cooldown. Soul Harvest modifiers increase Shade regeneration through abilities when you kill creatures or damage bosses. These are selected modifiers, not automatic effects on every Spirit skill.
Decide what you want to spend Shades on first. Before adding more spenders, check whether your chosen abilities also help regenerate the resource. If you keep running out, review the balance between your spending and generation modifiers.
2. Choose a Role for Eidolon Guards
Eidolon Guards are powerful but fleeting spirits. You can keep them present longer by sacrificing Life or healing them with other abilities. You can also use their short duration with effects triggered on summoning and death. If your guards disappear quickly, decide which approach your build is meant to use. Sustaining them matters when you have chosen to keep them in the fight.
Athanekros is Spirit’s major summon. This backline spellcaster has unique spells and access to some of your other Spirit abilities. It can contribute damage or support your defenses. Include it in the same resource plan as your guards and empowered spells.

3. Separate Life Reservation From Dark Pact
Many abilities offer the option to reserve Life instead of Energy. This can free Energy for other actions and support a low-Life setup. Check whether the option exists on each relevant ability and how much Life remains available to withstand hits. Dark Pact makes a different trade: it directly sacrifices Life for Energy and other buffs. If you use both, your build still needs to handle the Life loss during combat.
Since the August 19 hotfix, Life reservation through sustained abilities cannot itself kill your character. Incoming damage remains dangerous when little Life is available. Spirit also emphasizes Vitality damage and life leech. The August update made life leech stronger early on but increased the investment needed for it to remain effective later. If survival is a problem, reserve less Life or consider healing and further investment in life leech.
4. Group Enemies and Check Your Build
Soul Vortex pulls enemies toward its center, helping you land difficult area attacks on a group. It can also apply a debuff that makes your damage hit harder inside the vortex. Execution instantly kills enemies below a threshold that active and passive choices can alter. Plan around the effects you select rather than assuming one threshold or debuff applies to every build.
- Running out of Shades: Compare the modifiers that spend them with those that improve regeneration through kills or boss damage.
- Guards disappear too quickly: Choose between summon-and-death triggers and sustaining them with healing or Life.
- Running short of Energy: Consider Life reservation on eligible abilities or Dark Pact while keeping enough Life for combat.
- Struggling to survive: Reserve less Life and review healing or life leech investment before adding more damage modifiers.
